Thinking Woman

Women’s Issues

In the Book of Luke, readers learn that Mary was caring for Elizabeth, and then later when Mary learned what the shepherds had been told about the birth of her own son "Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart." (Luke 2:19 NIV)

Dr. Yiota has given Mary's behavioral examples much thought over the years, and has observed that is what women are brought up to do — nurture and ponder, especially when life feels out of synch, balance, and control, and can't pinpoint why. The chances are that even if you do know why, you will consider the topic to death anyway.

Sometimes you may think worrying is your job since no one else is tending to the task. Sometimes, it's because you don't know what else to do when something needs to be done. Often women reflect to the point of unhealthy rumination while at other times, women simply prefer to contemplate than get a good night's sleep. Go figure! Mary pondered, Dr. Yiota ponders, and you probably ponder too!

This is why one of her favored topics of interest lies in women's issues. Today, women's lives in society are challengingly complicated regardless of the time or season of life. Emphasizing the "whole-person" approach, she hopes to empower women to achieve a sense of balance and control over their lives while also listening to the inner voice that directs, advises, and counsels. This helps you to better understand your feelings and if need be to change your behavior.

"We'll both be better women for having embraced the journey together."

Some Women's Topics Include:

  • Developmental & Identity Tasks
  • Relationship Problems
  • Self-Esteem & Body Image
  • Sexuality & Health Concerns
  • Social & Cultural Issues
  • The Challenge of Caretaking Roles

Family Issues

Problems can develop in even the best of families resulting in challenging, frustrating, and painful interactions among its members. Few families are exempt from this reality. This is why working with families is another passion of Dr. Yiota's. From little irritations and buried resentment to dramatic arguments, feelings of guilt, disappointment, and anger we did not even know we had, families often bring up the most intense emotions we experience in life be it for better or for worse.

In a perfect world, resolving family problems requires the cooperation of everyone involved. This provides an excellent opportunity to strengthen ties and interactions. However, this is not a perfect world, and both men and women can be strong instigators of any adjustments once they set their mind to doing so. Call Dr. Yiota to brainstorm what can be done to get a transformation going in your household, regardless of whether you attend alone or with another family member.

Which One Is Right for Me — Counseling, Psychotherapy, Coaching, or Biofeedback?

  • Counseling: In this process, you'll find understanding and solutions for everyday life problems in an intellectual manner.
  • Psychotherapy: This refers to the treatment of mental and emotional disorders through the use of therapeutic techniques. It is designed to encourage communication of conflicts and insights into problems with the goal being personality growth and behavior modification.
  • Life Coaching: Here, you will set goals and work a plan for a specific outcome with accountability as a primary ingredient.
  • Biofeedback: This is training to control physiological processes such as muscle tension, blood pressure, or heart rate to alleviate emotional responses to stress.

    And sometimes they intertwine!
